Repair or replace? How to make the call on an aging AC

Nobody replaces an air conditioner for fun. The question usually arrives attached to a repair quote: the system is down, the estimate is serious money, and you have to decide in Florida heat whether to fix the old one or invest in new. Here is a framework for making that call with a clear head.

Start with the $5,000 rule

Multiply the repair quote by the system's age in years. Under $5,000, repairing is usually reasonable. Over it, replacement deserves real consideration.

It is a rule of thumb, not a law. But it captures the real issue: money spent on a system near the end of its life is money you will likely spend again soon.

Factor in the age curve

Repairs past it are usually the first payments on a slow, expensive goodbye, especially when the failures involve the refrigerant circuit: coils, leaks, and compressors.

Run the efficiency math

A 12 year old system was built to an efficiency standard two generations behind today's SEER2-rated equipment, and years of coastal wear mean it is not even hitting its original numbers. Many Florida homeowners who replace aging equipment see meaningful cooling-cost reductions, and in a state where the AC dominates the electric bill, that savings partially funds the new system. Ask contractors to estimate operating costs for the replacement they propose; good ones will.

Other signals that tip the scale toward replacement

  • Breakdown frequency. The second significant repair in two years is a trend, not bad luck.
  • Refrigerant leaks on an R-410A system. Recharging an old leaky system is increasingly poor value as the industry moves to newer refrigerants.
  • Comfort problems repair can't fix. Humidity that never quite clears and rooms that never cool often trace to sizing or duct issues a new, properly sized system resolves.
  • Visible corrosion. A rusted-through cabinet or heavily corroded coil is structural aging. There is no repair for old.

Questions to ask before signing either way

  1. What exactly failed, and what caused it?
  2. If I choose the repair, what condition is the rest of the system in?
  3. If I replace it, what size is right for this house, and how was that calculated?
  4. For coastal homes: what corrosion protection does the proposed equipment carry?
